Graduation Day – April 30, 2004

Every graduation ceremony at NTS is quite the affair – the end of student life and the beginning of a professional career in the performing arts. This year, alumni were present at the ceremony held at the Ludger-Duvernay Theatre of the Monument-National. This was a first Association des Anciens/Alumni Association initiative. Alan Bleviss (Acting 1966) and Pascale Dénommée (Interprétation 2002) addressed the gathering as presidents of the AlumnA and ADA respectively and alumni representing the different programs taught at the School stepped onto that still familiar stage and welcomed the graduates into the profession. On the English side, they were: Diana Fajrajsl and Raoul Bhaneja (Acting, 1981 and 1996 respectively), Nick Carpenter (Playwriting, 1998), Spike Lyne (Technical Production 1986) and Mérédith Caron for the bilingual Set and Costume Design program, of which she is a 1977 graduate. This just may be the start of a new tradition!

The Lieutenant Governor of
Québec Award

During this year's Graduation Ceremony, the Lieutenant Governor of Québec Award was accorded to French Acting graduate Hubert Proulx. This award is given in recognition of academic achievement; it also underscores the personal, social and communal undertakings of the chosen candidate. Throughout the duration of his four-year training period, this young actor was a motivator and a bridge between the two linguistic communities at the School. A dedicated actor, deeply committed to his craft, Hubert Proulx will most definitely leave an impression.

Official Opening of
The Ross Creek Centre for the Arts

Ken Schwartz (Technical Production, 1990 and Directing, 1992) and Chris O’Neill are the founding members and artistic directors of Two Planks and a Passion Theatre in Canning, Nova Scotia, and owners of The Ross Creek Centre for the Arts. Located in rural Nova Scotia and overlooking the Bay of Fundy, The Ross Creek Centre for the Arts is a facility dedicated to nurturing artistic development and learning. The Centre will have its official opening in the summer of 2004, coinciding with their Summer Festival (July 31 – August 1).

Dusan Dukic Drops By The School

Dusan Dukic (Acting 2002) came by the School in early April. He was in Montreal filming the lead role in L’Énigme de James Edward Brighton, a Production Castor and Pollux. Directed by Denis Langlois, it is slated for release in the Fall of 2005. He is also putting together a new theatre company in Toronto with fellow graduate Thelon Oeming (Playwriting 2002).

Guest Teachers and
Guest Directors

March and April saw quite a roster of wonderful guest teachers at NTS – Larry Isacoff and Pam Nichol (Technical Production, 1976 and 1991 respectively), Lynne Cormack, Susan Stackhouse (Acting 1982), Karin Randoja (Acting 1988), Andrew Wade, and Susan Williams. Sarah Stanley was here to direct the first year actors in The Ecstasy of Rita Joe; Peter Hinton directed the second year actors in The Honest Whore; Mary Vingoe directed playwriting graduate Ryan Hughes’ On the Hook, and Bryden MacDonald was here to direct The Splitting Effect by Blair Francey (Playwriting 2004).

Leaving the School

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Eric Jean, the right hand man to Denise Guilbault, Artistic Director of the French Sector. Éric has been appointed Artistic Director of Montreal’s Théâtre Quat’Sous. Maryse Warda, Associate Director General will also be leaving to immerse herself in her writing and translations. Ann Lambert, Playwriting Program Coordinator will be returning to Dawson College, where she will certainly be an inspiration to a great number of young and talented artists in the making.
