Open House 2010
THEATRE, A REFLEXION OF OUR WORLD
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 :: 11 A.M. TO 5 P.M
Montréal, September 16, 2010 – Drop by the
National Theatre School (NTS) for its annual Open House, on
Saturday September 25th, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, as part of the 14th Journées
de la culture! If theatre is your passion and you want a peek at what goes on
behind the scenes, the NTS will open its doors and welcome the public. This year,
the theme is Theatre, a Reflexion of our World, and we invite you to explore the
notions of exile, immigration and cultural diversity through theatre, an art form
that can often help us understand the ever-changing world in which we live.
Both the English and French sections of the School have been working hard to show off
every facet of theatre training to its best advantage: playwriting, acting, directing,
set and costume design, sound and light design, voice, movement, etc. Activities are in
both English and French and, best of all, admission is free.
Among the activities concocted by students and teachers alike:
- "Who are We?" Guided by their director and playwright Brian Drader,
the students enrolled in the NTS Playwriting program have been delving into their own personal
immigration histories: each aspiring playwright has written a short play based on his or her
findings. Be among the very first to hear these original works, throughout the day! This activity
will be done in conjunction with students from Écriture dramatique, the NTS’s French
Playwriting program.
- "The way to get lost" Under the guidance of famed South African
director Yaël Farber, who now heads the NTS Directing program, and
Québec director Robert Bellefeuille, coordinator of the Mise en scène program
(French Directing program), the School’s four directing students will each present a creation
based on their personal view on exile. All four pieces will be presented in a single room and
Open House visitors will be able to move freely from one artistic proposition to another. This
activity, entitled The way to get lost, may very well take the
public to the four corners of the globe!
- There will also be open rehearsals, choral concerts, movement
classes and workshops to attend. Sit in on 2nd-year actors in their
physical theatre exploration with Maiko Yamamoto and Ker Wells,
join in a drawing class with teacher and painter François Vincent or see
scale models created by Set and Costume Design program students. If the School teaches it,
the public will witness it!
Anyone who has ever been curious about what really happens inside the NTS, Canada's leading
theatrical teaching institution for 50 years – which to date has trained more than 1,900
of the country's best and brightest talents – can satisfy that curiosity on Open House day.
