A Resounding Success

The auction of Michel Tremblay’s watercolors, Enfin naïf 3, held in October at the Monument-National, was an all-round success. The money raised, totalling $15,819, will be placed in the Michel Tremblay Bursary Fund. The School feels very privileged to have received such a generous gift from the renowned author and playwright, and is deeply grateful.

Over the past few years, the NTS has been able to initiate and consolidate 115 Bursary Funds totalling over $4 million. The School invests this capital and distributes the generated revenue as bursaries to help those students most in need. In 2002, 88 students shared $200,000 in bursary money.

The School Goes to Prague

With student drawings in one hand and business-cards in the other, Danièle Lévesque, Director of the Scenography Program, will travel to Prague next June to attend the Prague Quadrennial, an important international exhibition focussing notably on scenography. Accompanied by representatives of the School and some of the students in her program, she’ll be able to get the pulse of what is being done around the world and establish contacts with her acolytes from home and abroad.

Although the School feels that this trip is an incomparable opportunity in terms of learning and personal growth, NTS does not have the funds to send all of the program’s students to the Quadrennial. The students have therefore created a fundraising committee to organize various special events and projects to finance the trip. If you wish to help out, please contact Valérie Rhême, Publications and Special Projects Coordinator, at 514.842.7954, ext. 156.

Carole Fréchette Honoured

Playwright Carole Fréchette (French acting program, 1973) was awarded the Elinore and Lou Siminovitch Prize in Theatre last October. Created in 2001, it is given in alternate years to playwrights, designers, and directors in mid-career who have made a significant contribution to theatre in Canada. The prize embodies dedication to excellence and mentorship. Accordingly, Carole Fréchette received $75,000 of the $100,000 prize and $25,000 went to her protégée, Geneviève Billette (French playwriting program, 1998).

Congratulations!
