::: DEATH OF PHILIPPE CASGRAIN: THE SCHOOL LOSES ONE OF ITS GREAT BUILDERS
Philippe Casgrain, Life Gorvernor and former Chairman of the Board of Governors (1968-1971),
passed away peacefully on February 28.
For over 45 years, Maître Casgrain was one of the most ardent and loyal patrons of the School.
Not only was he Life Gorvernor and former Chairman of the Board, he was also the Honorary Legal Counsel
of our institution. He played a leading role in promoting the best interests of the School with all
levels of government, including our legal system, when it was needed. His accomplishments are
varied and numerous but particular mention must be made of the determining role he played in the
acquisition, renovation and construction of our buildings, in the advancement of the eligibility
of our students to loans and bursaries, and to the definition of the governance of the School.
Philippe Casgrain could very well have been a graduate of the NTS: he possessed the talent, creativity,
passion, generosity, intelligence, originality and sensibility of a great artist. His presence will
sorely be missed but the NTS will ensure that his legacy as a master builder of this School will live on.
Shortly before his death, one of his close colleagues on the Board of Governors, created The Philippe
Casgrain Bursary for Voice and Diction at the NTS. Should anyone wish to make a contribution, please
contact Catherine Rideout at catherinerideout@ent-nts.ca.

::: STEVEN MCCARTHY'S DIRECTING PROJECT
Steven McCarthy's
(Acting, 1997) final directing project was performed at the NTS on February 26 and 27. He directed
Bliss, first written in French (Félicité) in 2006 by 1996 French Playwriting graduate
and schoolmate
Olivier Choinière
and translated by none other than Caryl Churchill. Bliss had its English world première at
London's Royal Court Theatre
in March 2008 and has been performed since then by different theatre companies around the world.
His mentors for Bliss were formidable Quebec director and 2007 Gascon-Thomas Award winner
Brigitte Haentjens,
and Graham McLaren, Artistic Director of the multi award winning
Theatre Babel.
Steven is sincerely grateful and proud that the NTS gave him this opportunity to direct Bliss.
He is keenly aware of the special nature of this project – an English Section graduating student,
directing a play by a French Section playwriting graduate which has been translated by arguably
the best English playwright living today. He states that "the merging of the two cultures, the
exchange and learning that takes place, is one of the special and unique gifts of being in
Montreal and attending the National Theatre School".
