THEATRE ONTARIO SHOWCASE 2011
Theatre Ontario hosted its annual showcase of theatre program graduates from across Ontario, and the NTS was once again invited to participate. Auditions were held on January 16 and 17, 2011 at the Jane Mallet Theatre in the St. Lawrence Centre, Toronto. The National Theatre School graduating actors auditioned on Sunday, January 16.

In preparation for the showcase, actor Jonathan Goad (our photo) directed and coached, with Artistic Director Sherry Bie, 2011 Acting students Ishan Davé, Brett Donahue, Matthew Donovan, Katy Grabstas, Curtis Henschel, Sophie Holdstock, Adrian Morningstar, Philip Nozuka, Alexandra Ordolis, Jackie Rowland, and Samantha Wan.
50TH ANNIVERSARY MEDIA CAMPAIGN
There is an NTS 50th anniversary drive-to-web broadcast media campaign going on and it's happening on CBC NewsNetwork as well as during Figure Skating Competitions on CBC tv. Fifteen second ads featuring Sandra Oh (Acting, 1993) and Roy Dupuis (Interprétation, 1986) are presently running until February 15.

A similar French-language campaign has been running since January 3 featuring Roy Dupuis and Elise Guilbault (Interprétation, 1985) on ARTV, SRCtv, RDI, and the web tv site tou.tv.

Concurrently, a French and English web media campaign is running on approximately 120 sites such as canadaeast.com, eyeweekly.com, huffingtonpost.com, drudgereport.com, baystreet.ca, cyberpresse.ca, lapresseaffaires.com, lemonde.fr, workopolis.com and technaute.ca.

Damned Be the Hands that Did this Thing
NTS Directing Program Director Yael Farber (our photo) directs her adaptation of The Theban Plays by Sophocles. Performances will be held from February 22 to 26, 2011 at Montreal's Ludger-Duvernay Theatre of the Monument-National.

New Words
Arctic Ocean, written by 2011 graduating playwright Jill Connell will be performed at the Hydro-Québec Studio of the Monument-National between April 26 and 30, 2011. Jill's graduating piece will be directed by Denise Clarke, associate artist with One Yellow Rabbit and recent winner of the Calgary Economic Development Established Artist Award acknowledging her significant contribution to the growth and development of the Calgary community.
MORE INTERNSHIPS FOR PRODUCTION STUDENTS
Andrew Brodkin is interning at the Avon Theatre, Stratford Shakespeare Festival, with Technical Director Elissa Horscroft and Master Electrician Gregory Bride.

Eugenio Saenz Flores is interning with Production Manager Jeff Cummings of Toronto's Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People, whose season includes a visit by Théâtre tout à Trac's production of Alice in Wonderland.

Kaileigh Krysztofiak will intern with Lighting Designer Howell Binkley, as Assistant Lighting Designer for the production of Jesus Christ Superstar, at the Avon Theatre, Stratford Shakespeare Festival.
ALUMNI PROFILE: ZAZ BAJON
Zaz Bajon graduated from the Production Program in 1968. After leaving the School, he worked with Young People's Theatre, Tarragon, Theatre Plus, Vancouver Playhouse, Rainbow Stage, Red Barn Theatre and the Canadian Stage Company. He is retiring from the Manitoba Theatre Centre in June 2011, after having served as General Manager for 30 years.

ALUMNI NEWS
Lise Ann Johnson (Directing, 1992) is directing Morwyn Brebner's (Playwriting, 1996) translation of Strawberries in January by Evelyne de la Chenelière, at GCTC, January 25 to February 13, 2011.

Sarena Parmar (Acting, 2007) is currently shooting the second season of the YTV show, How to Be Indie, in which she plays the part of Indie's sister, Chandra.

Adrienne Zitt's (Acting, 2003) company, The Actor's Kitchen, is presenting a fundraising show, The Memory of Water: girl power on stage!, at the Hill Street Theatre (Edinburgh), from April 26 to May 1, 2011. View the trailer and learn more about the show.

Patrick Lundeen (Acting, 2009) is the Artistic Director of ECGAS (Edmonton's Common Ground Arts Society), an organization dedicated to putting on shows by Edmonton's emerging artists from all disciplines. The company resides at the Avenue Theatre, where Patrick is the Theatre Manager; the venue is primarily used for live music, but is now showing dance, theatre and art as well. He plans to present Tick, by Matthew MacKenzie (Playwriting, 2009), in June 2011.
NTS MOURNS GINA WILKINSON AND MICHAEL LANGHAM
Gina Wilkinson
The NTS community extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Gina Wilkinson (Acting, 1982), who died of cervical cancer on December 30, 2010. Gina was an acclaimed actor/playwright/director who worked extensively across Canada. She began her acting career at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and went on to perform a range of classical and contemporary roles on stages across the country; she also starred in numerous television shows and films. As a director, she worked at the Shaw and Stratford festivals, Soulpepper Theatre Company, and Tarragon Theatre, among others. Playwriting credits include My Mother's Feet, her first play, and Whistle Me Home. Gina was also a painter, contributing illustrations for the novel, Fall on your Knees, by Ann Marie MacDonald (Acting, 1980).

Michael Langham
One of the 16 founding members of the National Theatre School, Michael Langham passed away recently at the age of 91. "Michael dedicated his life to the quest for excellence, not only as a theatre artist but also as a builder of Canada's leading institutions such as the Canada Council for the Arts, Stratford Festival and of course, the NTS". The School mourns the loss of this spirited and distinguished man of ideas and extends its condolences to his family.

MONUMENT-NATIONAL
Nuit blanche cabaret

On Saturday, February 26, between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., the Monument-National (an NTS theatre complex) will host Le Cabaret de la Nuit blanche©. The show will highlight several generations of francophone singer/songwriters, poets, slam artists, and DJs. This event is under the aegis of the Montreal Highlights Festival's High Lights Event.
