END OF YEAR ACTIVITIES
The 2011 English section's graduating class show, Arctic Ocean, is taking shape at the Monument-National, whereas the entire French section of the NTS, including the 2011 cohort, is caught in an immense gridlock of cars, buses and words, at Hangar 16 in Montreal's Old Port. Their show, embouteillageS, opens on Thursday, April 21.

But that's not all. The end of any NTS school year is a hive of activity and this year is no exception: Directing students Yevgeniya Falkovich (our photo) and Sophie Gee burned the midnight oil with their end of year directing projects. After Miss Julie, by Patrick Marber, was directed by Sophie, while Yevgeniya chose to direct Sarah Kane's Phaedra's Love; performances were given with professional actors on April 15 and 16.

ARCTIC OCEAN
A NEW WORDS FESTIVAL EVENT

Arctic Ocean, written by 2011 graduating playwright Jill Connell, directed by Denise Clarke, Associate Artist at Calgary's One Yellow Rabbit, and performed by the 2011 graduating acting class, will take place at the Hydro-Québec Studio of Montreal's Monument-National, from April 26 to 30.

Arctic Ocean is a compressed mythology, a rhapsody embracing the birth and death of a rock star, the making of centaurs, the blooming of pear trees and the suicide of houses. Connell has created a world of magic realism inhabited by characters who desire permanence in a world that is make-shift, who are alien even where they are indigenous, in a story that is by turns touching, tragic, hilarious, and bewitching.

THE NTS AT RIDEAU HALL
On April 6, 2011, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, hosted a reception at Rideau Hall in honour of the National School of Canada's 50th anniversary. In his heartfelt speech, His Excellency paid tribute to the School's founders, saying: "I want to acknowledge at the outset those who worked so hard to establish the School back in 1960 and who nurtured it through those early years. The vitality of Canadian theatre and its presence on the world stage today is thanks in no small part to their pioneering efforts." Speaking on behalf of the School were Jodi White, Chair of the NTS Board of Governors, Simon Brault, the School's CEO, and Guy Nadon, a 1974 graduate of the French Acting program.
