SHERRY BIE RETIRING
FROM THE NTS

On May 29, CEO Simon Brault announced that Sherry Bie, Artistic Director of the English Section of the NTS since 2001, will be retiring in December, 2012. He stated that "for over a decade, Sherry Bie has steered the English Section with skill and devotion. She has marked the history of our institution by establishing a new balance between traditional training and creative exploration and her artistry will be missed."

The School is presently recruiting a new leader who should be in place by October 2012. The hiring process will consist of a national search that will include a review by a selection committee comprised of renowned specialists in theatre training and chaired by Mr. Brault.

2012 GRADUATES : SET & COSTUME DESIGN
2012 Set and Costume Design graduates are:

This year alone they have designed sets and props, created costumes and designed video projections for all of the English and French 2012 graduating class performances.

YAEL FARBER, FROM CAPE TOWN TO EDINBURGH
Yael Farber, Directing program director, has been commissioned to create a new adaptation of Strindberg's Miss Julie for the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town, South Africa. Mies Julie, written and directed by Yael, will attempt to capture the current political realities affecting South Africa today, after almost two decades of democratic rule. The production will premier at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, ZA. It will return to Cape Town to play a season in July and, in August, travels to the Edinburgh Festival for its world premier at the prestigious Assembly Rooms. Yael returns to us to begin the year with her new students in the fall.
DORA MAVOR MOORE AWARDS
NTS Nominations

The 33rd Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards, presented by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA), celebrate extraordinary Toronto talent in the performing arts. The awards will be presented during a ceremony on Monday, June 25 at 8pm at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in the Bluma Appel Theatre. Best wishes to the following NTS graduates who have been nominated in a variety of categories:

– Evan Webber (Acting, 2005) – Outstanding New Play (Ajax & Little Iliad, Harbourfront Centre's World Stage presents Evan Webber and Frank Cox-O'Connell — Acting, 2005)
– Pamela Sinha (Acting, 1990) – Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Principal Role (Crash, Theatre Passe Muraille)
– Sabryn Rock (Acting, 2006) – Outstanding Performance by a Female, Musical Theatre Production division (Caroline, or Change, Acting Up Stage Company in association with Obsidian Theatre Company)
– Richard Donat (Acting, 1967) – Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Principal Role, Independent Theatre Production division (His Greatness, Independent Artists Repertory Theatre)
– Natasha Greenblatt (Acting, 2007) – Outstanding Performance, Theatre for Young Audiences division (The Neverending Story, Roseneath Theatre)
TEC: 27 PROJECTS SELECTED
Among the 39 projects received by the April 1, 2012 deadline, 27 were chosen by the TEC selection committee and will therefore receive funding as part of this program.

Projects submitted by anglophone students and graduates were evaluated by Simon Brault, CEO, Sherry Bie, Artistic Director of the English section, as well as Brendan Healy (Directing, 2005), director and Artistic Director of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre (Toronto, ON), for Ontario submissions, and Anthony Black (Directing, 2003), writer, director, actor, designer, producer, and co-artistic director of 2b theatre company (Halifax, NS), for projects sent in from elsewhere across the country, notably from Eastern Canada.

Theatre Engaging Communities is a unique program created by the School in 2011 in order to support original, socially committed artistic projects initiated by its students or recent graduates.

RETIREMENT OF MONIQUE FOREST
Monique Forest, a French Production program graduate (1971), a dear employee, colleague and "dean" of the Bleviss Family Library will retire from her position in July 2012, after 35 years of service!

We wish her all the best for a retirement full of health, happiness, writing and travelling projects, and most importantly, the time and pleasure to spend with her family and friends.

Congratulations to Ruth Howard (Set & Costume Design, 1986 and our photo), Artistic Director of Jumblies Theatre, who has received the George Luscombe Award for Mentorship, one of the Dora Mavor Moore Ancillary Awards, presented by TAPA (Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts).

Here's what some of our alumni are up to over the course of the summer:

Greg Ellwand (Acting, 1981) is performing his one-man show, Greg Ellwand's BREAD!, featuring live music by Dan Imbrogno and directed by Toni Ellwand, at the Toronto Fringe, July 4 to 15. This show is an expanded version of the piece Greg performed at the NTS Alumni Cabaret during Homecoming weekend, in October 2011.

Sébastien Heins, Flóra Quintus and Nico Racicot (all Acting, 2012) are presenting The Upshot, featuring their solo pieces, directed by Adam Lazarus and Jodi Essery, at the St-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival, June 17 to 24.

Evan Webber and Frank Cox-O'Connell (both Acting, 2005) are performing their 2 plays Ajax and Little Iliad at the Banff Summer Festival, from June 21 to 23, 2012. Pierre Antoine Lafon-Simard (Mise en scène, 2009) designed the video for Little Iliad and Megan Flynn (Acting, 2005) is the play's artistic producer.

The Devil We Know, by Cheryl Foggo and Clem Martini (Playwriting, 1982), is being produced at the Blyth Festival, from August 1 to September 1.

PUBLICITÉ SAUVAGE: 25½ YEARS OLD!
Until August 5, the Monument-National presents the 7th in a series 15 exhibitions by Publicité sauvage. The Montreal poster distribution company is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The selection of 37 posters from local festivals, events and shows allows visitors to live some of the best moments of Montreal's cultural scene over the last two decades. At the Scène Financière Sun Life, only on show nights.
REMINDER: NTS SUMMER HOURS
The School's Saint-Denis Street Campus is open all summer, from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, except during Public Holidays and Friday afternoons, starting June 15 to August 10 inclusively.

The Bleviss Family Library will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm until June 22 and will repeat this schedule once again from July 30 to August 10. The library will be completely closed to the public from June 25 to July 27.
